Sock Bun Tutorial

How to Make Your Sad Little Bun Look Big and Beautiful.

I've had a couple requests from readers to do a tutorial on the updo you've seen me wearing on a few occasions. I taught myself to do it after reading a couple tutorials online and lots of trial-and-error. Hopefully this step-by-step little guide will help you to have a lot less error than I did. I've included two different ways to achieve the same look so you can find the one that works best for you. Feel free to email me if you have additional questions!

  1. I'm so impressed! My sock buns don't usually turn out this amazing, and I'm double impressed that even with short hair it can work so well! It's difficult to find a sock colour that matches my hair for one - maybe I need white. Also I can never seem to spread it all evenly, but I'm thinking I don't spend enough time spreading, spraying, and pinning. These tips really helped and you look gorgeous in your sock bun!

    1. Thanks, Rachel! I think the second method is easier for shorter hair, but it requires more pinning and spraying to make it stay in place. With the first method, I hardly have to pin it at all, and just a little spraying will do.

Something that seems to help is curling my hair under a little just at the ends. It wraps and rolls more easily that way.

    2. Yes! That might be key for me! I think since my hair is so straight, all the layers want to stick out straight like chop sticks :) I'll try curling it under, thanks!

  3. My daughter is a US Marine and I have been begging her for a year and a half to teach me the "Sock Bun" technique that they use. She wouldnt. Well, I do not have to beg anymore. I have shoulder length curly hair and this worked for me!! I had to use a small dress sock and my hair looks great! Thank you SO SO much! Semper Fidelis!

  4. What do you mean by "roll your hair down that sock"?? I've tried the other method and keep getting holes..and then very frustrated! Thanks if you can help!!

    1. Put the sock near the end of your ponytail--leave about an inch or two sticking out. Spread your hair out as much as you can so it's going in all directions out the top of the sock, then begin rolling the sock toward your head, taking the hair with it around the outside--kind of like a hair volcano!

The key is the continued rolling and tucking the hair under. That is when you can fix any holes or pieces sticking out. If you have pieces that are being stubborn, use a little hairspray before you tuck so the hair sticks better.

    3. I had trouble rolling my waist long hair down the sock, so I put the ponytail in the sock and wrapped my hair around the sock, spread it out and pinned the ends under. Cheers thankyou very much for the inspiration!

  6. Um, that fact that you have thin hair just made you one of my favorite bloggers on this planet. I was beginning to think that I was the only one with this problem. I look forward to more tutorials, because I was near to hopeless. So excited to try this!

  14. Thank you so much! I have long hair but very fine, dead straight, and few, and this technique did the trick. I tried it for the first time yesterday and was brave enough to wear it to work. Then the same night I did the sock bun again and wore it to bed- the next day....beautiful wavy hair that lasted. Love it. I tried all the other bun gadgets and this one is the best of the bunch. Very nice blog.

  23. about how long does you're hair have to be? mine can almost barely put it into a ponytail, so do i have to wait or can i try now?

    1. You'll have to wait until you have enough hair in your ponytail to cover the sock; otherwise, you will just end up with a sock on your head.
