Petite Work Attire: Texture in Black and Red

Photos: Katie Derus | Jacket: Ann Taylor (similar on sale here, similar in petite sizing here) | Skirt: Ann Taylor (somewhat similar here) | Shoes:Via Spiga | Bag: Rebecca Minkoff (similar here)(Cranberry Morning After Mini last seen here)| Brooch: Boutique (similar here) | Bracelets: Nordstrom, J.Crew, F21, Boutique

When I need to dress conservatively, I like to add a little interest to my ensemble with colorful--but tasteful--shoes and accesories. I also try to mix subtle textures in monochromatic materials to create a look that draws the eye but doesn't stand out too much.

In this outfit, I spiced things up by adding these Via Spiga red snakeskin pumps, a red bag, fun bracelets, and a brooch to my black outfit. In the detail shots, you can also see that the jacket is a tweedy material trimmed with a little ribbed black ribbon, while the skirt has a tonal dot texture that both complements and contrasts with the jacket.

I've had a couple reader questions about my work style, so I was wondering if you all think it might be helpful to have me do a more in-depth post about the ways I spice up my conservative work wardrobe. What do you think, readers?

  1. Oh I love it!! The texture of your skirt is such a brilliant surprise and really adds a lot. Also completely in love with your matching shoes/bag and the pattern of your shoes are fun but tasteful touch also! This really is a fantastic work outfit -- you look confident, stylish, and so chic. In answer to your question in this post, I know I would love to read a more in-depth post about your work wardrobe. Some of your work outfits have been among my very favourites of your's so anything related I would definitely love!

  3. Love black and red together. This look is pretty conservative, but the red bag and shoes give it a fun pop!

  4. Hello! My first comment on your fantastic blog. I love your outfit and your whole look. You look like you could conquer the world! Everything is so simple yet has the maximum impact - this is how I'd love to dress. And I especially love your accessories, this is one of many things I'm struggling as I've never been able to accessorise properly.
I totally agree with the above comment about your brooch too.

  8. It is so incredibly difficult to wear a structured jacket like yours without looking like an old lady, and you managed to pull together such a sleek updated version of the classic look. And yes I'd love to read about your work wardrobe!
