Work Outfit: the Shirt-under-Dress Look

Today I'm sharing a simple work look that puts a favorite sheath dress to work as a grown-up, chic rendition of the classic schoolgirl-style jumper.

I don't often wear this type of structured collared shirt with my suits because of their tendency to quickly become untucked and unkempt-looking when I'm constantly moving around a courtroom (yes, you really do have to stand up every time you make an objection or speak at all, then sit right back down). Under a dress, however, it's a non-issue, and with the sleeves rolled down and a blazer on top, the whole look is very professional and put-together.

The J.Crew classic Painter Boatneck Tee is one of my favorite items for fall, winter, and spring. This weekend it was warm enough for me to style my tee with a pretty mustard-and-gray scarf that was just the right weight for the weather.

Black jeans and my trusty Frye boots got me through a session at the park with the pup where all he wanted to do was run helter-skelter, kick up leaves, and bark at and chase after other dogs. I eventually passed him over to boyfriend, who was them wrangling both camera and dog, but all in all, it was fun (don't worry--boyfriend's fun came later when we stopped by a nearby brewery he likes for a few beers!).

Around this time last year, I picked up ASOS' "Bonjour" sweater and loved it, styling it here, here, here. When I saw that the same concept was back in the form of this "Pardon Moi" slogan sweater, I quickly snagged one. I like that this sweater is available in petite and regular sizing--the "Bonjour" sweater only came in regular, and the petite means it's not quite as long on the bottom. This sweater does have a relaxed fit, so if you're considering it and want a closer fit, order one size down.

I was initially intending to save this flouncy skirt for a special occasion, but I couldn't wait to wear it and decided to style it a little more casually for brunch. Although it seemed hard to wear at first, I made up my mind that it looks pretty cute with a sweater or longer shirt, and I'm thinking a peplum top could work with it, too.

A word of caution: I'm wearing a Petite 1 here (my usual ASOS size), but I think if I were ordering it again, I'd size up or consider the regular version as this one sits pretty high on my waist, and a strong breeze can make it look, ahem, not-so-ladylike. The texture and thickness of the fabric are nice touches, though, and the skirt definitely feels more expensive than it is.

I got to play dress-up a little the weekend with this gorgeous dress from Anthropolgie (can you tell I love their petites section?). It was a lovely, cool weekend in Denver, which was a nice break from the recent heat wave.

Happy Friday! I wanted to share another work outfit with you--this blouse has been so versatile that it's been getting a lot of wear for both work and play (see it styled more casually here). While I love incorporating color into my work wardrobe (like this past Monday's cobalt blue), neutrals are my office mainstay. Not long ago, I began hunting for a new pair of work-appropriate neutral pumps to give my much-loved Ann Taylor pair a break.

Around the same time, I decided to join Poshmark, an iPhone/iPad (free) app and shopping site where you can easily sell and buy other ladies' clothes and accessories. I have been thinking about joining for a while, but I was feeling a little hesitant. Once I started browsing through other users' closets, though, I realized a lot of them were very similar to me, and it was a great forum to sell some of the not-quite-right online purchases and items I've worn only once or twice. I was browsing shoes in my size when I came across the pair of perfectly neutral Stuart Weitzman heels I'm wearing here. They were authentic, brand-new, and a third of the retail price, and they were an instant hit. I've been really impressed with the app, and when I ended up selling something the other day, the shipping and payment pieces were super-easy.
