It's been a gorgeous fall week this week in Denver--sunny, but cool enough to pull out my favorite boots for the first time in months. I added a leather jacket to this ensemble once the sun went down for extra warmth. I'm looking forward to a weekend of fall weather and colorful leaves.

I'm planning on doing some pumpkin carving and maybe a corn maze--what are you doing this weekend, readers? Any fun autumn plans?

Big Shot Dot: Remixed

Dress (worn as skirt): J.Crew (Big Shot Dot Dress, Spring 2012--last seen here) (similar here) | Shirt: Aeropostale (last seen here) | Sunglasses: Karen Walker | Shoes: Stuart Weitzman | Clutch: Arden B. (similar style here) | Necklace: Ann Taylor (old) | Bracelets: J.Crew, Vintage | Rings: Vintage | Watch: kate spade new york

This pretty polka dot dress has been sitting in my closet unworn since its last outing over a year ago, so I decided to try styling it as a skirt. I loved the result--pretty, feminine, and more casual than the dress on its own. (Added bonus: styling a dress this way gives me the opportunity to wear the knotted shirt trend without the risk of midriff peeking out at an inopportune moment!)

Another drive-by post from me today--seems like I've been doing a lot of them lately (sorry, guys!). Between the abysmal weather recently and craziness at work, it's been tough getting time to blog.

I've also plunged into exploring calligraphy lately and have been spending a lot of time writing with an actual pen (the kind you dip into an inkwell) and paper, which has been challenging (to say the least) but surprisingly fun and relaxing. I've always loved giving and receiving handwritten letters and cards, and I've been wanting to learn lettering and calligraphy for a while, so I went and bought some supplies on a whim and have totally fallen in love. I have found myself trying and learning so many new things since I started this blog, which is wonderful. The more I pick up new skills (photography, graphic design, coding, etc.), the more I want to learn! I think my blogging experience has been a major catalyst in finding the inspiration, motivation, and confidence to try my hand at some of the items--blog-related or not--that have been sitting on my things-I-want-to-try-one-day list.

Have any of you experienced this phenomenon? What inspires you to learn something new?

5 Tips for Painless Pattern-Mixing

I've gotten a few emails lately asking about pattern-mixing--a trend that appears to still be alive and well at the moment--so I thought I'd write a post on some of the things I think about when I style a print-mixed look. It's important to note that these are tips, not rules. The concept of pattern-mixing requires a break from the traditional rules on wearing prints, so don't get too caught up in following a particular set of guidelines.

In each of the outfits above, I've indicated on their photos which of the following tips I considered when putting them together. You can see that not every tip works for every outfit, but picking a couple for each one helps the final product look polished and deliberate.

1. Stay within the same color family. This doesn't necessarily mean the same color, although that can be an easy way to tie things together. You can also use darker tones, jewel tones, neon tones, or pastel tones to create a more cohesive color scheme. In the outfit on the top right, the neon yellow stripes, sea green scarf, and purple coat all share a springy, slightly electric tone that makes them work nicely together.

2. Use colors that are both contrasting and complementary in your look. Your outfit will look less like your eccentic grandma's coordinated loungewear if you pair one print that's lighter in its overall color and one that's darker. This seems like it might be contradictory to Tip #1, but you can easily apply both #1 and #2 in one outfit--see the beachy striped dress outfit above. The reddish-pink cardigan with its smaller navy stripes both contrasts with and complements the white base color in the dress and scarf, while the navy stripes in both the dress and cardigan tie them together.

3. Choose prints with different proportions. Pair a bold or dense print with a more subtle, sparser print to avoid overwhelming the eye. In the black-and-white dress and cardigan look above, the bold, graffiti-esque print on the dress contrasts well with the sparse polka-dot print on the cardigan, and keeping them both in the same color family makes it look like they were meant to be worn together!

4. Mix classic patterns. Sticking with classic patterns like polka dots, stripes, houndstooth, plaid or paisley adds a touch of the traditional to an outfit that otherwise eschews conventional pairings. In all three outfits on the bottom row, I've made use of this tip by pairing stripes with plaid (left and center) and houndstooth with leopard and dots.

5. Leopard print is a neutral. Treat leopard print (and similar classic patterns) as a goes-with-everything neutral. (Caution: pick one leopard-print item per outfit--you can maybe stretch this to two if one is a lighter-colored leopard and one is darker.) In the outfit on the top left, I mixed leopard-print pumps with a floral skirt, thinking of the leopard as similar to a nude shoe (but a little more exciting, obviously). In the photo right below that one, I used a light-colored leopard belt to create a neutral divider between my subtle paisley-print blouse and bolder navy polka-dot skirt.

P.S. Congrats to Julia of Lemon Stripes, the winner of my Cambridge Satchel Giveaway! I can't wait to see you style it.

Work Outfit: Dot, Spot, & Houndstooth

Coat: J.Crew | Dress: Ann Taylor Factory (similar in petite and regular sizing) | Tights: Nordstrom | Sunglasses: Karen Walker | Shoes: Nine West (similar style here) | Bag: Rebecca Minkoff (similar here| Necklace: Ann Taylor (similar here) | Bracelets: Tiffany, Vintage, F21

Going through recent posts during my redesign process, I noticed I haven't posted a work outfit in a while! As I was creating this post, I also realized my work style has evolved a bit over the last couple years, from strictly no-nonsense suits and shells to more dresses and separates. I adore dresses for work as they tend to look neater at the end of a busy, stressful day--no rumpled jackets, creased pants, or untucked blouses to wrangle make for a happier and more put-together me.

The dress I'm wearing in these photos was a recent purchase at Ann Taylor Factory, and I love the way they turned this fun, graphic print into a work-appropriate dress that pairs nicely with a lot of the black and white pieces that dominate my work wardrobe. It reminds me of another Ann Taylor dress I own where a neutral palette was used to make a leopard print more work-friendly.

A Little Print-Mixing, a Little Restyling

Photos: Katie Derus | Jacket: H&M (old) | Sweater: Vince Camuto | Jeans: Current/Elliott (similar here) | Headband: Nordstrom | Belt: Urban Outfitters | Scarf: F21 | Sunglasses: Karen Walker Perfect Day | Shoes: Old Navy | Bracelets: Ann Taylor, Common Era, Boutique, J.Crew | Ring: F21

First of all, I wanted to tell you all that I am blogging from a plane. I know this technology has been around a little while, but I haven't ever tried it before. I absolutely love feeling productive on a plane ride, so this is pretty thrilling for me!

I promised in in my last post that I'd show you another way to style this neon-striped sweater. This look would be perfect for those spring days when the weather is a little cooler--still bright, cheery, and colorful, but warm enough to keep you comfortable on a breezy morning. It's also another way to comfortably color-block and mix patterns without a lot of brain damage (see me mix stripes and dots in a different outfit).

Hopefully I'll be able to get Internet at my destination so I can stay in touch with you all! Have a wonderful weekend!
